The Bluefin, commonly called red tuna, also called “tonno di corsa” (running tunas) because at its passage in the Mediterranean Sea, in the month of April, the fish runs towards its reproduction coming from Terranova, through the Gibraltar Strait. The females and the males are ready for the reproduction season, with the meats in their best consistence. The San Pietro Island is famous all over the word thanks to the presence of the ancient tuna fisheries, a unique place dedicated to the permanent fishing of Carloforte’s red tuna. The meat of the red tuna is very refined, it is one of the most appreciated in the whole world and contains a higher omega 3 percentage compared to the other ones on the market.
